Your Private Safari Host
Frank Steehuisen is a private safari guide and wildlife photographer. Accompanying his guests on multi-destination safaris, he is not fixed to one specific lodge, region or country. He creates custom safari itineraries which he facilitates throughout the whole of Africa – specific to the requirements, expectations, duration and requests of his guests, providing a far more in-depth and enriched safari experience.
Guests spend an extended amount of time with their personal guide Frank, learning from him about different areas, habitats and species along the way. Having Frank on board for the entire trip brings with it a far-reaching sense of continuity and peace of mind, knowing that he is there to take care of you whilst ensuring your enjoyment throughout the entire safari.
With his nature guiding qualifications (both in South Africa & Botswana) and his first hand experience traveling and guiding across the continent, he has built up a wealth of knowledge allowing him to lead safaris to many African destinations with great success. He does, however, specialise in Southern Africa, with a particular fondness of Zambia & Botswana. Frank has identified key regions in these two countries to be his all-time favourite for immersive safaris experiences & loves sharing these with his guests.
Some of the best experiences in his favourite regions evolve around three major river systems: The Okavango, Zambezi & Luangwa rivers. It is here where he has identified superb lodges and suppliers with whom he partners to ensure unforgettable & exclusive experiences in incredibly productive wilderness areas for his guests.
He leads a range of different safaris such as: specialist photographic workshops, multi-day walking safaris, adventurous safaris, birding safaris & expeditions to unchartered destinations.
Why safari with Frank?
Originally born in Pretoria, Frank spent the first half of his childhood in South Africa. At the age of 5, his family acquired a holiday home situated in the open wildlife system of the Greater Kruger National Park. The frequent visits to their home in the bush sparked his passion and curiosity for all things wild and natural. He spent many weekends on the tracker seat, behind the wheel, and flicking through reference books learning as much as he could about the fascinating Lowveld ecosystem.
At the age of 12 he immigrated with his family to Australia, where he completed his high-schooling and enjoyed a totally different lifestyle for a while. But his love of Africa never dwindled – and neither did his visits to the continent as he grew older. Twice a year his family would return to South Africa, from where they would overland across to neighbouring countries. It was during this period that Frank developed his love of Botswana.
Many years down the road, Frank realised that University and a career in Australia wasn’t for him and decided to return to South Africa to pursue his passion: to become a professional safari guide. An intensive year-long practical training course in South Africa and Botswana ensued. During this training, Frank met his now wife – Gesa Neitzel, a German bestselling writer specializing in African wildlife. What a life altering decision that was.
Today Frank is a director of safariFRANK, he’s a qualified field guide in both South Africa & Botswana and a specialist Photographic & Birding Safari Host – accompanying guests to some of the finest safari destinations across Africa on privately guided safaris. These destinations have included South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park, Botswana’s Okavango Delta & surrounds, Zambia’s Liuwa Plains – South Luangwa – Luambe & Lower Zambezi National Parks and Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou & Mana Pools National Parks.
When Frank is not on safari helping you to get the most out of your camera and the situation, he is taking photos himself. He is a true addict to wildlife photography and also spends many evenings under clear African night skies with his guests to teach them the techniques of night-time photography. Whether you are just starting out and wanting to get the most out of your camera or you are a seasoned professional – Frank can help you get the shot you’re after. Let’s tailor make your safari to the best locations to help get you the perfect wildlife-shots!
