Meru forms part of a larger conservation area covering 370,000 acres including the adjoining Kora, Rahole and Bisanadi Reserves. The park also incorporates an 84km2 rhino sanctuary, making Meru one of the prime destinations to see rhino in their natural habitat. The birdlife is extraordinarily colourful and abundant with over 400 species of birds.
Rugged and remote, Meru National Park was rescued from oblivion thanks to Elsa’s Kopje, an environmental award-winning, boutique lodge. Visitors get the whole place to themselves: all 870 km2 of it, including a thriving rhino sanctuary inside the Park. Famous for large elephant herds, lion and birdlife, and more diversity of animal species than any park in East Africa; Meru is also the only National Park to permit ranger-guided bush walks. Situated on a secluded and picturesque site, the Camp replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920’s. The interior fixtures and furnishings mirror this period perfectly, reminding all who visit of those countless Hollywood movies that have paid homage to a classic era of African adventure.
Your stay at Sand River Masai Mara is for 2 nights in a Luxurious Safari Tent, and is on all-inclusive basis (includes all meals, bush activities and drinks – excluding premium drinks)
The Masai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply “The Mara” – a Masai word meaning “mottled” – a reference to its patchy landscape.
The Reserve covers 1,510 sq. km (580 sq. miles) and raises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. The terrain of the reserve is primarily grassland and riverine forest with clumps of distinctive acacia trees. It is about 270 km from the capital city Nairobi and takes about 5-6 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by flight.
The wildlife of the Masai Mara is world-renowned, with the so-called “Big Five”- buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros – evident throughout the year. The “Big Nine” – including cheetah, zebra, giraffe and hippo – extends this experience.
The Masai Mara also plays host to the ‘Annual Migration’ but whatever the time of year the resident wildlife will surely enthral and entertain all who visit this wondrous reserve.
Finally let us not forget the colourful inhabitants of this exceptional landscape. The Masai are a proud semi-nomadic cattle-rearing people with a fascinating culture, divided into several sub-tribes some of which share the Mara region. The Masai are an ever-present reminder of the history and cultural heritage of this sublime and enigmatic landscape, and will surely leave a lasting impression for all.
Rise early for breakfast before a full day game drive. Enjoy a picnic lunch served in the bush. The Masai Mara is famous for its astounding numbers of wildlife. With both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, elephant, to name a few, as well as over 450 bird species, the vast fertile plains are dense with game. The area has been classified among the “Seven Wonders of the World” due to the extraordinary annual migration from July to November when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of greener pastures. Then you will have the opportunity to Interact with the Masai tribe in their village. A final farewell dinner under the stars.
We suggest today you book a hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara. You depart the camp before sunrise and transfer in the balloon safari company’s vehicle (with other travellers) to the balloon staging site. After a briefing from the pilot, the crew will inflate the envelope. At sunrise, you begin your ballooning adventure with flights at different levels to give you both an overview of Masai Mara National Reserve and a close look at the wildlife. After about 50 minutes, you land and the chase crew will take you to a picnic site where you are provided a bush breakfast complete with bubbly to celebrate your successful flight in the tradition of balloonists over the centuries. You then transfer back to the camp.
Enjoy a morning game drive or relax at camp. After lunch your flight will take you back to Wilson Airport. You will be chauffeured to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport; before arriving there, you will stop at one of Nairobi’s gourmet restaurants where dinner will be served. Arrive at the International airport for your outbound flight.
Today your Kenya Safari has come to an end. We trust you will take home memories to last a lifetime and hope that we can welcome you to Kenya again soon!
