A safari focused on helping you capture incredible images of Africa’s iconic predator species on top of a host of others that call the Luangwa valley their home. Gesa & Frank take you deep into the best game viewing area in Zambia where luxury bush camps, lions, leopards, wild dogs and everything in-between awaits!

South Luangwa National Park is nothing short of PREDATOR HEAVEN! It has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world with frequently more than one being sighted per day. Not to mention a healthy wild dog population coupled with big prides of buffalo hunting lions, the Luangwa harbours them all! The Luangwa is also home to plenty of elephants, buffalo herds, thousands of hippos, crocodiles and plenty of birdlife. Enough to ensure a wide and complete portfolio of images spanning a range of species, with predators of course being the focus!

Gesa & Frank have travelled Africa extensively, yet keep coming back to the Luangwa as the predator viewing there is outstanding. They have chosen two of their favourite camps which situated in prime areas of South Luangwa National Park and both grant access to different photographic opportunities. The first camp is located along the banks of the Luangwa river which gives access to the most ideal riverside leopard habitat as well as the water depending species such as hippo. The second camp is set further north and inside the National park where the wildlife is at its best and far fewer tourists are able to reach. The predator viewing here is simply mind-blowing so they named it “Lion Camp” for good reason.

The locations are prime, the wildlife is plentiful and coupled with Gesa & Franks passion for sharing their Africa photographic experience, this is set to be the perfect photo safari regardless of your level of photography.

detailed itinerary

Kafunta River Lodge is a classic Zambian safari lodge and combines all the essentials for a great safari. Here you will find the rest and peace you need after an exciting day on safari, in combination with personalised service and a warm welcome by the team.

Each of the luxury private chalets and the main lounge & dining area overlook the game rich flood plain. Beyond the plain is the Luangwa River and one of the best game viewing areas of the magical South Luangwa National Park. Kafunta River Lodge is situated on the edge of the Park making for easy access and is open from April to early January.

The eight private safari chalets have been built on raised wooden platforms and have thatched roofs. They are tastefully decorated with African style and charm. All were refurbished in 2014 to a high standard. Additionally, there are two luxury suites which feature a private deck, an upstairs viewing veranda and a luxurious bathroom.

Lion Camp is located far north of the busier Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa National Park, in an area which offers more exclusivity and has an abundance of wildlife. The area is home to spectacular and frequent sightings of lions, wild dog, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and everything else!

The camp offers 10 luxury canvas and thatch suites of which 8 are luxury suites and 2 are deluxe suites. Each suite is on a raised timber platform and offers a private deck, ensuite bathroom facilities, charging facilities, hairdryers, free wifi and outstanding quality linen. The main lodge contains an airy thatched area with many seating areas, swimming pool and a well-stocked bar, full size snookers table, shop and coffee station. The camp has electricity 24 hours a day which is supplied by solar power and backup generator.

The area lends itself to outstanding photographic opportunities with little other traffic compared to further south in the park, making this a great destination for keen photographers, particularly those in search of predators. Walking safaris are also on offer which are a great way to experience the finer details of the landscape otherwise missed on a vehicle.
