Join Yannick, a German & French speaking private guide and pro photographer, on an incredible 10-day adventure safari through our favourite spots in South Africa!

One of the best ways to truly experience the best of the Kruger is to visit the bordering private reserves that make up the Greater Kruger. It’s here where’s the game viewing, the guides and the experience are at its best – as you aren’t faced with the traffic jams that can occur in the public sections of the National Park when there’s a sighting. Instead you can spend quality, uninterrupted time enjoying the wildlife in open game viewing vehicles with expert guides!

This Safari hosted by Yannick Bindert, a German, English & French speaking private guide & pro photographer, exposes you to three totally different experiences in true wilderness areas of the Greater Kruger National Park. The trip starts with 3 nights of intense game viewing drives in one of the most productive areas of the Timbavati Game Reserve. An area home to all members of the Big 5 with added chances of seeing Wild dogs! From there you head to a different section of the Timbavati where you will leave the vehicle and experience proper walking safaris for 4 full days – with some of the best walking safari guides on the continent! Learn how to track members of the Big 5 on foot, tips on survival & bushcraft and get back to nature on this immersive experience! Then, as if that wasn’t enough, head up to the most beautiful part of the Kruger National Park – the Makuleke concession! Not only is Makuleke one of the most scenic, diverse and special parts of the Kruger – it’s also where Yannick, Frank & Gesa did their safari guide training so it holds a truly special place in our hearts! Here you can explore the area for 3 nights on both game drives and walking safaris as activities.

The Greater Kruger with Yannick Safari affords you the chance to spend time with German & French speaking private guide & photographer Yannick Binder and expert local guides in wildlife heaven!  It gives you the chance to find members of the Big 5 by vehicle and on foot and visits the incredibly beautiful Makuleke concession!

detailed itinerary

Day 1

The trip starts once you arrive into Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport. Here you will be met by Yannick & your transfer driver whom will take you to your first camp – Shindzela Tented Camp.

Arrival into camp will be in the late afternoon, where you will be briefed on the camp, freshen up and head out on a quick sundowner drive in the evening. This will be an introductory drive and a good chance for everyone to get to know one another.

The Timbavati Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger and lies nestled between the Kruger National Park on the east, the Klaserie and Umbabat Private Nature Reserves in the north and the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve in the west. As there are no fences between Kruger National Park and the Timbavati, the reserve enjoys a wide variety of game, including the big five.

Day 2 & 3

You have two full days of game viewing activities ahead of you here to get the most out of the area. The camp is located in one of the most productive wildlife areas in the Timbavati so the aim for these activities is to find some of the more elusive animals, mainly predators! Morning and afternoon drives will be 3-4 hours long, but depends on the weather and sightings you come across.

Timbavati: An area made famous for its natural occurrence of the extremely rare – WHITE LIONS. Although these are an extremely special and rare sighting (Frank having only seen them once in his life) there is the slight chance of us being lucky. Our other target animal species however are some of the famous Timbavati leopards who call the riverine areas home, as well as some healthy wild White Rhino populations. This area truly is a hotspot for viewing of the big 5.

You also have the ability to let the afternoon drives extend into the night allowing for viewing of the nocturnal animals and their behaviors. The bush comes alive at night with expected sighting of animals such as Lesser Bush babies, Genets and hopefully some BIG cats!

Day 4

You will start the day as usual with a morning drive however this will be your last in the area so you will try one last time for any species we may have missed or anything else you happen to come across! On your return back to camp, you will get our bags packed, have a good breakfast and then hop in your transfer vehicle that will take us to the next camp set futher into the Timbavati.

The drive should take us somewhere between 1-2 hours to reach your new home for the next 3 nights – Lowveld Trails Co Mobile Camp. The aim is to arrive just after midday for some relaxation and familiarization of the camp!

You will then head out on your first introductory walking safari.

The Tented Camp is operated out of the central Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which is open to the Kruger National Park. This basic unfenced camp is erected under giant Jackalberry trees along a dry riverbed prior to each trail and completely removed upon departure, assuring minimum impact and therefore leaving no-trace. There is no electricity, mobile phone signal or WiFi, but we trust that you’ll find a strong connection.

Day 5 & 6

A typical day starts with a wake-up call prior to sunrise. As the birds announce the approaching day, you enjoy coffee and rusks before heading out on a 4 to 5 hour walk, as soon as sufficient daylight allows. You return to camp around midday for a well-earned brunch, before the daily debrief and a few hours free to shower, read or take a nap. A late lunch is served at around 3pm, before you head off into the wildness again for a 2 to 3 hour walk.  Dinner and a crackling campfire awaits back at camp, usually followed by an open air shower and an early night after an eventful  day.

The trails will expose you to the fine detail, the grandeur of the landscape and the thrill of moving among large mammals. Well beyond activity, it is a fully immersive experience that permits participation in nature as opposed to traditional spectatorship. It is real, visceral and completely authentic.

Day 7

On this morning you will enjoy a relaxed sleep in, followed by a full cooked breakfast before your early morning transfer to Makuleke. Roughly a 5-6 hour transfer through villages, small towns and an hour of driving through the Kruger, sees you arriving at Pafuri Camp which will be your home for the next three nights. You aim to arrive into camp shortly after lunch time for a camp introduction, freshen up and a well-deserved afternoon tea before setting off on your first drive introducing you to the area.

The Makuleke Concession will be something totally different to what you’ve experienced previously on the trip. It is made up of many different vegetation types and habitats that make it very unique. It is made famous from Fever tree forest, a popular spot for weddings, and breathtaking landscapes like Lanner Gorge. This place is special to Yannick, Gesa and Frank – as it is where they met and is their absolute favorite part of the Kruger! Your target here isn’t so much on the big 5, but much more on being out in a truly wild and special place.

Day 8 & 9

You have a full 2 days of activities to explore and experience the concession. You will do the usual early mornings and afternoon activities, again with the option of exploring the area at night with a spotlight to view the shy nocturnal creatures.

Middays spent lounging by the pool and the rest of the time out in wilderness. There’s something about this place that really gives one the sense of being remote and away from civilization. It will also be the most luxurious of the three camps!

The Concession is located in the most North Easterly corner of South Africa and forms the border between Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa – also known as Crooks Corner. The Limpopo River makes up the Northern Boundary of the concession and the Luvuvhu River, the Southern. In between these life-giving rivers is where you will explore the different habitats of Makuleke, ranging from mopane woodland, grassland, palm thickets, fever tree forests, riverine forest and many more. Along with this diverse habitat comes huge diversity of animal life – Makuleke being one of the top birding and botany spots in the entire Kruger. You can expect to be overwhelmed by the beauty and complexity of the area, which we consider to be the best part of the Kruger!

You can also look forward to the option of exploring this untamed wilderness on foot. It gives you the ability to access areas which we are not able to get to by vehicle and also not to mention the thrill and experience that is walking safaris! The number of walks, duration and distance depends on the group and the weather conditions.

Day 10

Today marks the end of your journey through the best parts of the Greater Kruger National Park with Yannick. A short sleep-in followed by a big breakfast before you depart on an early morning transfer to O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), arriving with plenty of time for your onward connections.

Helpful tips

  • Visas/Passports: Please ensure: 1) that you have pre-arranged your entry visa if required; 2) that your passport is valid for at least six months after your scheduled departure date from South Africa; 3) that you have a minimum of 2 consecutive clear pages. If this is not the case, there is a danger of being turned away by the Immigration Service on arrival at the airport – assuming your airline has agreed to bring you and risk a fine in the first place.
  • Health: No vaccinations are mandatory but please consult your doctor for medical advice. Parts of South Africa are considered to be malarial so we recommend the use of anti-malarial prophylactics (normally Malarone), especially if visiting during the summer (December to April) – subject to advice from your own doctor.
