“An Epic Green Season set departure mobile safari in Botswana”
Discover Botswana during the Green season on this incredible 12-night mobile safari showcasing Central Kalahari, Nxai Pan National Park and the Okavango Delta. Experience fantastic wildlife with a lush green backdrop – oh an don’t forget about the Zebra migration in Nxai Pan!
Botswana truly is a year-round destination and this safari is a testament to that. The annual rains transform the Kalahari Desert into a lush-green and vibrant ecosystem just begging to be explored and photographed. It’s also the time of year when most mammals are having their calves, when the migratory birds return, the flowers bloom and the Zebras return to Nxai Pan! This safari will leave you wondering why this isn’t considered the ‘peak season’…
This safari starts with a leisurely first night spent in Maun where you can fight off the jetlag, before setting off the next morning to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Spend a full 3 nights in the famous Deception Valley of Central Kalahari exploring the vast pans. At this time of year most of the grazing animals congregate around the pans, attracted by the new grass after the rains. This in-turn attracts the predators to focus their efforts around the periphery of the pans, making this the choice season for optimal game viewing in the Kalahari – this will be your best chances of seeing Cheetahs! From Central Kalahari, you’ll make your way to Nxai Pan where you will spend 2 nights. Similarly, the animals are attracted to the pan itself but what really steals the show here is the annual Zebra migration that brings thousands of Zebras to the region. Combine this with the resident lion pride, stunning green season colours and fantastic birdlife; makes Nxai Pan an incredible destination. After Nxai Pan, it’s time to say goodbye to the Kalahari and hello to the Okavango Delta, as you head to the famous Khwai Concession. Khwai being a community concession allows for off-road driving and night driving so your opportunity for wildlife viewing is enhanced greatly. The area is also home to a very high concentration of wildlife and a good population of predators including lions, leopards, wild dogs and hyenas. After Khwai, your final 3 nights will be spent deeper in the Okavango Delta, in the Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi is home to beautiful landscapes, outstanding birding, large concentrations of plains game and even a chance to see all members of the Big 5, although the rhinos are still very rare. At the end of the safari, a scenic charter flight takes you back to Maun for onward connections or an extended safari.
Upon your arrival at Maun Airport with SA Link flight 8200 from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg OR SA Link Flight 8604 if you are coming from Cape Town, your guide will meet you and transfer you to Maun lodge, which is roughly 15 minutes from the Airport. You can rest here for the afternoon by the pool and fight off some jet leg. Your Guide will join you and go over the safari program over dinner.

We set off to a new area after breakfast. Letiahau is another water hole some distance south of Camp. The trip there takes you past Deception Valley pan. Because of the openness of the Kalahari, one finds a lot of Honey Badger activity, digging for grubs in valley floors. Very often they are followed by Pale Chanting Goshawks. Bat Eared Fox are also in abundance here. We return to camp for lunch and some rest, before setting off again in the afternoon for the afternoon game drive and a Sundowner in the valley.
There is a great book that captures the life of the Kalahari, written by Mark and Delia Owens called ‘The Cry of the Kalahari’. This young couple lived not very far from our camp, and we drive past where they used to live daily. The site will look familiar with some of the pictures in their book. It is not unusual to find Lions at the waterhole in the morning, but Cheetah, Bat Eared Foxes are quite common here too. You get back to camp late morning to a hearty brunch, a short nap, reading or a bucket shower.
Not far South of Nxai pan there is a cluster of Baobabs, on the edge of Kudiakam Pan, made famous by explorer and missionary by the name of Thomas Baines. He documented them in the 1870’s and they still stand today, quite like in the drawing. The afternoon game drive could be a visit to these Baobabs, returning to a Sundowner in camp before dinner.
