An epic week in the Zambian Wilderness along with Gesa Neitzel and Frank Steenhuisen as your safari hosts! Join them as they take you to their all time favourite National Park in Africa.

THE SAFARI: The safari starts with a return charter flight for the group from Livingstone. This flight is not included in the price because the cost will depend on the final number of guests on the tour and thus could not be calculated in advance. The group will arrive at Jeki (inside Lower Zambezi NP) airstrip where you will meet Gesa & Frank and set off to the first fly-camp. The first 4 nights of the tour will be spent at a fly-camp located along the Zambezi River where game driving (particularly night driving) will be at its best and we intend to make the most of this activity for these nights to ensure great game viewing at the beginning. The game viewing is simply unbelievable, and the area is incredibly scenic – which is why both Gesa and Frank agree that this is their all-time favourite National Park in Africa!

The last 3 nights will be spent at a camp located on an Island on the Zambezi River where activities will be mostly walking and boating safaris and maybe morning game drives. We will have both camps exclusively for our group and naturally activities will be decided at the time and remain flexible depending on the group or animal movements. We have the choice between driving, walking and boating and any combination of them! We have the ultimate freedom to explore this park at our own leisure and during the month of May there are almost no other tourists, so we have it all to ourselves! Gesa & Frank cannot stress enough how amazing this safari will be!

guides

Frank Steenhuisen

Originally born in Pretoria South Africa, Franks passion for Africa’s wildlife started at the age of 5, with frequent trips to his family’s property in the Greater Kruger area. 20 years later, with a stint of Australia living in-between, Frank now travels Africa extensively as a photographer, private safari guide and director of safariFRANK – identifying and visiting some of the finest safari destinations on the continent.

Gesa Neitzel

Gesa worked as a television editor in Berlin before the call of the wilderness lured her to the African continent. After several long-term trips around the globe, she discovered her love for the African bush and decided without further ado to dare being trained as a ranger in South Africa. Her book about this bold career change “Breakfast with Elephants” became a bestseller shortly after publication. Gesa is now a photographer, author and freelance tour leader exclusively for safariFRANK, who films her life every week in her “SAFARI SUNDAYS” and definitely has not seen enough baby elephants yet …

accommodation

The trip will see you comfortably accommodated, well fed and very well looked after. The camps are the perfect mix of adventure with comfort and are perfectly safe.

The 2 fly-camps are simple with stylish luxury camping, under the stars and around the campfire. The key is the difference between both Kutali & Chula Camp in terms of atmosphere and location. The magic lies in the combination. Chula Camp is only accessible by boat, this gives it a wild and remote atmosphere and feeling. This little camp is set back from the main river amongst thick natal mahogany trees overlooking a lagoon and the main river. The focus is on walking and river activities here. Kutali Island is a classic Lower Zambezi valley location set amongst Elephants in a thick winter thorn forest directly on the banks of the main river. Access is an adventurous drive through 3 river channels and all activities are offered at Kutali Camp.

Each camp consists of only 4 tents (stand-up height) which will have single comfortable beds with top quality linen provided (can be joined to form doubles on request), en-suite bathrooms with hot hanging bucket showers, flushing toilets and a washbasin with a mirror. Flush toilets in a fly-camp!! Luxury!

The canvas can be left open at night (mesh layer only -spectacular views) but can also be dropped down if it is cold or for privacy reasons. These are raised during the day to allow for good airflow if it’s hot as well as the fact that you are able to view the Zambezi from your bed.

additional information

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Must be willing to sleep in comfortable yet basic tents which sometimes only have a transparent mesh layer for protection (they are safe!).
  • Expect warm temperatures but should be pleasant as the season starts to change to winter. Slight chance of late rains although unlikely.
  • The vegetation is still holding some of its green colours from the raining season and the air will be cleaner and crispier than peak season, better for photography! Although this means more food and water availability so less concentration of wildlife, but still incredible!
  • Each tent has an ensuite bathroom with flushing toilet and hot or cold bucket showers on request.
  • Charging facilities available in the main area only.
  • Guests must be fit enough and willing to partake in walking safaris in areas containing Big Game. There is an armed Wildlife Police Officer who accompanies the walk as well as very experienced and qualified Zambian walking guide.
  • The group will be split into two smaller groups for activities to allow for more space and safety on walking safaris.

Additional Info:

  • Services subject to availability at the time of booking.
  • Times of activities, meals, transfers is subject to change.
  • Given the nature of this safari, the age restriction is a minimum of 16 years paying full fare.
  • Maximum age is 65. Anyone older than this is required to produce a medical certificate proving that they are physically able to participate in the activities and terrain in which the safari tour will be conducted in. This is extremely important because of the high number of walking safaris.
  • PLEASE NOTE that whilst we endeavour to accommodate guests at the above stipulated lodges/camps, safariFRANK reserves the right to replace such with one of a similar standard and location.
  • As of paragraph 6 of our German T&C’s, safariFRANK has the right to cancel the trip latest 75 days before start of the trip. The trip cannot be cancelled by safariFRANK later than 75 days before tour start.
  • Terms and conditions apply.
  • Rates are quoted as per person sharing.
  • You shall receive a 2,5% discount on the overall tour price, if paying in total upfront. In case of a non-favorable exchange rate, you will be charged the difference 60 days before departure in case of a favorable exchange rate, we will grant a credit of the same kind.

HANDY TIPS:

  • Visas/Passports: Please ensure: 1) that you have pre-arranged your entry visa if required; 2) that your passport is valid for at least six months after your scheduled departure date from South Africa; 3) that you have a minimum of 2 consecutive clear pages. If this is not the case, there is a danger of being turned away by the Immigration Service on arrival at the airport – assuming your airline has agreed to bring you and risk a fine in the first place.
  • Health: No vaccinations are mandatory but please consult your doctor for medical advice. Parts of Zambia are considered to be malarial so we recommend speaking to your doctor about the use of anti-malarial prophylactics (normally Malarone), especially if visiting during the summer (December to April) – subject to advice from your own doctor.
  • Luggage: Is restricted to 20 kg (including hand luggage) per person in a soft bag. Weight is generally less important than volume as everything is carried with you on safari. If adding extensions that involve light aircraft transfers the luggage limit may be reduced further to 12 kg in soft bags (please enquire if this may apply to you)
