This 3 Night experience allows the guests to share in a special perspective of the Delta and is ideal for those with an adventurous spirit. Walking in the wilderness is a ‘true’ and authentic safari experience. No special training is required as the focus is on exploration and discovery.

Guests are transferred by road from the Maun Airport to the Buffalo Fence on the edge of the concession (30mins) and make their way to camp in a traditional dug out Mokoro. If water levels are low then guests walk in to camp. From the camp the party will walk out each day covering approximately 10 -15km per day.

The area is perfect for walking consisting of a series of Delta Islands with open plains where game can easily be seen. From ants to buffalo, a bird’s nest to tracking wild dogs, you will learn from experienced Walking Guides the many facets of the bush. The fully serviced mobile camp is extremely comfortable and well-equipped with walk-in tents and full bedding. The shower is under a tree and the toilet is a bush loo. Meals of the highest standard are served under the open African sky.

No vehicles are involved, and this, along with their working in partnership with the local community, guarantees a genuinely environmentally-friendly safari.

There is no set itinerary and the location of the camp is dependent on water levels and wildlife movements. However, every location is exquisite with plentiful choice of shady tree-lined islands.

detailed itinerary

INFO:

There is no set itinerary and the location of the camp is dependent on water levels and wildlife movements. However every location is exquisite with plentiful choice of shady tree-lined islands.

The itinerary below is an example of how you could experience a  walking safari in the Okavango Delta.

We also offer longer trips on request, either in the same area or through a combination in an alternative habitat.

DAY 1: OKAVANGO DELTA

Maun is known as the gateway to the Okavango Delta, recently listed as the 1000th World Heritage Site. Only a short drive to the north of this frontier town are the waters of this wondrous world covering an area of more than 18,000sq. km during the high floods.

Thousands of palm fringed islands are surrounded by seasonal floodplains. Elephants cross these floodplains leaving clear paths for us to follow as we explore on foot this stunningly beautiful area on foot from our private camp.

When the flood waters have receded we too can walk from island to island but at times of flooding we will use the Bayei’s traditional way of traversing the Delta – a mokoro (dug out canoe) – so keeping the islands accessible to us.

Our temporary camp is simple but extremely comfortable sited on the edge of an island overlooking a river channel with the grunting of hippos and tinkling of reed frogs providing a nightly chorus.

On arrival this afternoon there will be time for a safety briefing and a short evening walk.

DAY 2: WALKING SAFARIS IN THE DELTA

We may have been kept awake at night by the sound of elephants feeding around our tents or lions calling as they patrol their territory but days on safari must still start early whilst the day is cool.

The water, the floodplains and the islands of the Okavango Delta are a haven for wildlife. A morning walk will fill your head with so many memories – elephants swimming the deep channels, herds of red lechwe tripping through the shallow waters, glimpses of predators trying to stay hidden and brilliant birdlife everywhere.

And when the day heats up we will return to the shade of the camp or find a natural, crystal clear pool to have a refreshing swim.

In the early evening we will venture out again and marvel at the solitude and the extraordinary light across this extraordinary landscape as the sun sinks below the horizon.

DAY 3: FOLLOW GAME ON FOOT

Today we have the freedom to head in any direction that takes our fancy.

On safari it is important to be flexible and to allow your days to be dictated by the movement of the game rather than the time.

Perhaps we will have heard the sawing rasp of a leopard at night and we may spend the morning searching for this most elusive of cats. Or head to the nearby hippo pools to sit quietly and be entertained by their constant antics.

Back in camp after dark the incredible night sky will light up our camp fire stories.

accommodation

The fully serviced mobile camp is extremely comfortable and well-equipped with spacious walk-in tents and full bedding. Enjoy a famous bush bucket shower under the branches of a fig tree!

Meals are of a high standard and are freshly prepared by your own personal camp chef.
