Walking the Great South Luangwa Valley

What is this safari about?

This eight-night safari takes you to three camps along the Luwi River in the northern part of South Luangwa National Park. You will spend two / three nights at each camp and then walk three to five hours to the next camp – the time it takes depends on what you see on the way! This safari is perfect for adventurers and those looking for a really involved wildlife and wilderness experience.

As a seasonal sand river, the Luwi River rolls through some of the most remote areas of the National Park, carving its way through dramatically varying habitats to the confluence with the Luangwa River at Kakuli. The safari starts at the Luwi Camp, a location described as “the best little bush camp in Africa”, and then explores the wild areas up towards the source of the Luwi, an area rarely frequented by visitors. A few days are then spent at Nsolo, downstream of Luwi, with the safari ending at Kakuli with its wide views high on the banks of the Luangwa.

All walking safaris in Zambia are led by an armed wildlife ranger (also known as a Scout) and he is followed by the professional safari guide. The idea of having two fully trained experts at the head of each walk was conceived in Zambia and has been tried and tested for decades with an unparalleled safety record.

Guests can also opt to spend a night or two miles from civilization under the stars with just a ‘mossie’ net, a guide and a Scout for company and camp fires to ward off nocturnal visitors. This ‘return to the wild’ sleep out is only for the most adventurous of spirit!

With only four rooms each and designed to blend with its surroundings, the bush camps are small. Using natural materials in their construction and powered with solar energy, these camps are about as ‘green’ and wild as you can get, without compromising in any way on comfort and quality of food and service.

The camps only operate in the dry season from May to October.

Who can go?

  • Couples, small groups and families that are keen for the adventure of a lifetime.
  • Groups are limited to a maximum of eight individuals.
  • Whilst young children are not allowed in the National Park on foot (lower age limit of 12 years to walk), there is no upper age limit.
  • Walks are conducted at a slow pace, so a high level of fitness is not required. Usually there will be a tea bearer walking with and a break (or two) in the shade of a tree, or watching the river flow past.

Why is this special?

  • Experience the birthplace of African walking safaris.
  • This ‘real deal’ walking safari covers significant ground on foot.
  • Stay in intimate bush camps founded upon traditional safari tradition.
  • Sleep out under the stars.
  • Accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable local guides, ensuring your safety.
  • Carbon neutral safari operator.

Where is this?

Luwi and Nsolo Bush Camps are both located deep in the middle of the South Luangwa National Park, the only camps on the course of the Luwi River, a tributary of the Luangwa. Kakuli is placed on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa Rivers built on a high bank overlooking huge hippo pods and productive grazing lawns. Just up river is Mchenja, a luxurious and sophisticated bush camp which offers a wonderful place to end your safari adventure.

What should I expect to pay?

Rates at the bush camps start around USD $695 per person, per night, sharing. This rate is fully inclusive of standard drinks and transfers yet excludes park fees, which are additional.

Good discounts are available for children under age of 18, as well as package deals.

What Extensions do you recommend?

An extension to the other comfortable lodges in the Lower Zambezi National Park or at Livingstone will offer the best of both worlds!
