Traversing the Masai Mara Conservancies on Foot

“An extended walking safari across some of the best safari terrain anywhere”

What is this safari about?

This is a 6-day, 86-kilometre walking adventure across the some of the best safari terrain on earth!

Enjoy the unique opportunity to join well-known guide Roelof Schutte, on a walking expedition across the Mara conservancies from east to northwest. You will start in the Naboisho Conservancy and journey on foot through the Mara North, Lemek and Ol Chorro Conservancies.

This is a conservation journey across the Mara and you will spend time at wildlife conservation and community projects along the way. These include the Maa Trust, the Mara Predator Programme and the Mara Elephant Project. You will experience far more than just a walking safari, leaving with a deep understanding of the work that goes into protecting and supporting the communities and wildlife that live here.

You will walk between 15 and 20 kilometres per day, so this itinerary is not for the faint of heart and it requires a good level of fitness. You’ll stay in a mix of fly camps, permanent camps, and safari houses. All of the logistics are taken care of so you can focus on the varied landscape as you explore the greater Masai Mara on foot.

As well as covering significant distances each day, you’ll take the time to explore. Identify wildlife tracks, check out the bird and plant life you encounter and at times approach big game, all under the guidance of your expert walking guide, Roelof. You will need to carry your pack each day which will include packed lunches, snacks, and 3 litres of drinking water, while your main bags will be transported by the logistics team.

Fly camps consist of canvas dome tents equipped with bedrolls, proper duvets, pillows and towels on a twin share basis. There will be a communal shower tent with bucket-shower, a toilet tent and a basin with a jug of water for washing hands and face. There is a central mess tent for meals undercover in the event of rain, but meals are served in the open wherever possible.

There can be intermittent and sometimes heavy rainfall between November and March. Rain is typically not daily and the rainfall is usually overnight or in the late afternoon. It is very rare that the rain is such that you cannot do a walking safari or fly camp, as there are rainproof tents and a mess tent for dining.

The tour is for 6 days/5 nights from the 1st November to the 31st of March (excluding the 20th December to the 5th of January), and from the 1st of May to the 31st May.
