What is this safari about?
Visiting Tanzania and going on safari is so much more than you can ever imagine when you choose a 4×4 route and the adventure of roof top camping! Complete freedom to create your own adventure, at your own pace and with your own objectives.
Rent a fully equipped 4×4 in Arusha, plan the itinerary and off you go to wherever you heart desires! Should you prefer to have some local knowledge on hand, the safari can be escorted or guided. You can also brake-up the camping with some eco-lodge stays along the way.
Camping could be at private campsites in some areas, or in either public or special campsites inside the National Parks. At the public campsites you will share the space with other campers and the sites have very basic ablutions. When you book a special campsite, you will be away from everybody else and with NO facilities but camping on the plains of the Serengeti all by yourselves is an unforgettable experience, just magic!
The vehicles are rugged 300TDI Land Rover 5-door station wagons with a roof top tent and everything else that you will need, including navigation and a mobile phone. Each vehicle is equipped with one roof top tent and when adding aground tent, up to four people can travel per vehicle. Lodge-to-lodge self-drive can also be arranged.
If you have concerns about getting lost, you will be provided with a GPS and logged in waypoints. The GPS contains Tracks4Africa so you don’t need to waste valuable holiday time setting up this navigational system. Printed maps are also provided.
We recommend booking nine months in advance as Tanzania’s National Parks are normally booked fairly early.

Who can go?
- Couples, families, or small groups with multiple vehicles.
- Children of any age can go, but a minimum age of six years is recommended.
Where is this?
The options are endless when it comes to choosing your ideal safari itinerary, the only constraints are the time you have available and your particular interests and priorities!
Whether your interests are in wildlife, ornithology, landscapes, culture, or a bit of everything, we will tailor-make a safari that best suits you and is catered specifically to getting the most out of your time in Tanzania.
There are 17 National Parks and conservation areas to explore in Tanzania. The famous parks of Northern Tanzania are easily accessible from Arusha and therefore very popular. These are Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, enough said! Extended trips can also be done to Southern Tanzania including Ruaha, Selous and Katavi.
As well as drives into the national parks self-drivers can also access a number of select concessionary areas which are totally remote and unspoiled. A percentage of the fees go directly to the local communities so this is a great way to support conservation efforts and the locals.
What should I expect to pay?
The daily rate for a fully equipped Land Rover is around USD 275 per day with discounts available for long rentals. Vehicles can be picked up and dropped off in a number of locations, but fees may apply.
Camping fees in the National Parks vary but should be budgeted at around USD $130 per person per night.
What Extensions do you recommend?
A fantastic option to consider is the spend 3 nights at the Great Migration Camp which is a great addition to a self-drive safari. This camp is a truly mobile camp that moves with the migration on a micro level as it can be moved in a day. This provides great flexibility and the owners are thus able to guarantee quality sightings of the wildebeest migration! They are also great guides and know the Serengeti intimately as the literally live there. You can also still sleep in your own rooftop tent should you prefer!
Other extensions are of course the beaches of Zanzibar or Mafia Island for some R & R after the adventure of a lifetime!
