What is this safari about?

This 6-night adventure safari comprise of 4-nights on a camel supported walking & mobile safari across the Laikipia wilderness, moving to a new location every day and the last 2-nights at Tumaren camp for some R&R. This is just one of the VERY best experiences on offer, no wonder the safari won BEST WALKING SAFARI IN AFRICA IN 2017!

Walk daily between locations while the Karisia Team supported only by their camels, move the whole camp to the next location ahead of your arrival. The walking level is moderate to energetic, covering distances of between 12 to 16 km each morning. The scenery along the way is stunning and some amazing wildlife experiences await you under the watchful eye of your experienced and passionate guide. Arrive in the new camp location around lunch time and enjoy an afternoon siesta before setting out on one of the many afternoon activities on offer.

After 4 glorious nights on mobile safari arrive in Tumaren Camp for some rest and relaxation for the last 2 nights of the safari. Here you can do as little or as much you like, the tents are very spacious and comfortable and with an open plain and salt lick in front of camp, game viewing from camp is very good. There are also many activities on offer for those wanting to be more active.

The safari is guaranteed to make lasting memories for all involved.

Who can go?

The Karisia team designs walks for every fitness level, when they walk it is not like a military march! They plan for a great deal of stopping so that you have time to look at animals, insects, and flowers.

They take children as young as 4 years old and tailor the walk to suit the family. At the other end of the spectrum our oldest guest was 84!

Why is this special?

  • Award winning walking safari!
  • Laikipia a real wilderness with opportunity to see the Kenya’s ‘Northern Five’.
  • Family owned and operated mobile and permanent camps.
  • Camels a unique experience giving access to remote areas.
  • Great family wilderness experience for families with kids as young as 4!

Where is this?

The safari takes place in Kenya’s Laikipia highlands which lie 250 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, in the shadow of snow-capped Mt Kenya. It is a vast area, the size of a small country, and a great conservation success story of recent times. The area consists of several wildlife conservancies and some cattle-ranches, catering for a wide range of travellers.

Laikipia is home to a large variety of animal species including some endangered ones, such as the black and white rhino, around 2000 elephants and Kenya’s ‘Northern 5’. These are the Grevy’s zebra, East African (Beisa) oryx, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich.

Laikipia is around a 6-hour drive from Nairobi and guests can either drive or fly there or get a road transfer from Nairobi to the close by town of Nanyuki, from where the operator will pick you up, or you can fly in to camp by helicopter!

What should I expect to pay?

Karisia Walking Safaris offer 3 levels of tented camps on the mobile safari, Luxury, Classic and the famous ‘Air Bed and Camel’ for more budget conscious travellers.

Based on 4 guests the rates are around USD 700 pppn for the Luxury camp, USD 600 pppn for the Classic version and USD 400 pppn for ‘Air Bed and Camel’ option. Children under 16 are 50% of the adult rates.

What Extensions do you recommend?

The other parks of northern Kenya such as Samburu, Meru and Lake Turkana are great extensions.

The Masai Mara is the other standout experience of Kenya depending on the time of year.

Kenya’s coast is just magnificent with excellent beaches for families and the adventurous, with Lamu a clear favourite of the Team!
