Horseriding in Selinda Spillway

What is this safari about?

This safari offers personalised riding and hiking adventures from remote Motswiri Camp in Selinda Spillway, an ancient watercourse on the edge of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.

The riding safaris are accompanied by a professionally trained guide and a backup guide. In order to meet the needs of each rider, the groups consist of a maximum of  6 guests. Many kilometres are covered each day with up to 6 hours spent in the saddle. Good catering is provided during various picnic breaks to refuel you. Over 20 well-trained Thoroughbreds, Boerperds, Arabs and Kalahari crosses, large to small,  meet the needs of every rider.

All rides take place from the intimate camp with just 5 tented suites. Each is well-spaced, airy and very comfortable with their own viewing deck, toilet, ensuite shower and additional outdoor shower.

Spend your free time in the pool at the camp’s central area. Savour daily 3-course dinners overlooking the wide floodplains or enjoy chatting around a cosy campfire.

A minimum stay of 4 nights is recommended to enjoy your stay to the fullest. The camp and the routes are in a unique combination of floodplains, rivers and dry landscapes. Varied habitats provide an ideal home for many animals. Elephant, buffalo and hippo are very likely to be found and there is a high density of zebra, giraffe and rare antelope.

These game animals attract predators such as African wild dog, cheetah, lion and leopard. The water is populated with crocodile and the air with numerous bird species.

When flowing the spillway offers excellent fishing, swimming in crystal clear water or traditional mokoro (dugout canoe rides). Seasonal flooding cannot be guaranteed and is dependent on annual rainfall further upstream. If the water is low, game drives and bush walks can also be experienced.

Who can go?

  • As this is ‘big 5’ terrain, the safari is only suitable for experienced riders.
  • Rides and walks are usually limited to 6 guests, accompanied by 2 guides.
  • Children under the age of 16 are not allowed on rides or bush walks. Boat tours or game drives are available for them.

Why is this special?

  • Operates exclusively in 120,000 acres of pristine wilderness on the fringes of the Okavango Delta.
  • This is one of the most remote camps in Botswana and you are virtually guaranteed not to see another traveller.
  • When flowing the spillway is a very special place indeed.
  • Explore the spillway in a powered boat, or in the silence of a canoe or traditional mokoro.
  • Variety of activities are available for non-riders, making it ideal for varied groups.

Where is this?

The Selinda Spillway is an ancient watercourse linking the Okavango with the Kwando-Linyanti floodplains in the north of Botswana. It often flows from June to September, attracting a wonderfully diverse range of game and bird life. Northeast of the Okavango Delta spreads the Selinda Reserve, known for its unique floodplains and diverse nature.

120,000 hectares of this world-famous area is available for horseback riding, boat trips and bush walks. Guests fly from Maun or Kasane to Motswiri’s airstrip. The view from the air during the 40-minute flight is dramatic and a unique experience in itself.

What should I expect to pay?

The safari starts from USD$630 per person, sharing fully inclusive of all services, except charter flights in and out. Children up to 10 years pay 50% of the rate.

What Extensions do you recommend?

  • For the riding enthusiast, an extension to ride in Northern Tuli or the Makgadikgadi is recommended, allowing for a completely different experience.
  • Many of safariFRANK’s safari components can be linked – we recommend a mobile safari or stay at a rustic lodge.
