The lodge facilities are designed to enhance your experience by complementing the exquisite surrounding wilderness, with comforts of a slightly more modern nature.
The lodge’s beach deck is situation just above the dunes, offering a location for you to enjoy ice-cold beverages, on wooden loungers, while observing the seemingly endless sand beach in front of you. A fully stocked bar, serving delicious cocktails and specialty coffees, is available to you at any time. Two swimming pools, one for scuba courses and one for leisure, await you, each offering umbrellas and cushioned loungers. Meals are enjoyed either on the outdoor dining deck, or the indoor dining area, where the daily breakfast buffet is set up, for your enjoyment.
Experience + Activities
Mabibi Beach is regarded as one of the best snorkeling sites in South Africa. The coral reefs along this protected stretch of coastline are home to thousands of species of tropical fish. The lodge’s rockpool snorkeling area is home to mostly juvenile fish, however octopus, fire fish, moray eels and electric rays have also been spotted.
The snorkeling takes place in the bay, around 400 meters South of the lodge. Snorkeling is tide dependent and is best at low tide. Guests can also experience the thrill of snorkeling in the open ocean on shallow reefs, as well as SCUBA diving for additional fun!
SCUBA diving at Thonga Beach Lodge is nothing short of phenomenal, with reefs located only a short distance from the lodge. Shoals of game fish, sharks and schools of bottlenose dolphins are often encountered. All enthusiasts are welcome, from the beginner to the veteran. SCUBA training is also available at the lodge’s in-house PADI dive centre.
Further activities include Fishing, Sundowner Excursions to Lake Sibaya, Kayaking on Lake Sibaya and Open Ocean Experiences, which are sometimes referred to as “Ocean Safaris”.
The absolute highlight of the region however are the seasonal turtle tracking tours, which offer guests the privilege of experiencing the miracle of life, while tracking mother turtles, as they heave themselves onto the shores in front of the lodge, to lay their eggs (night time tours – November-February/March only).
For those who prefer a slightly slower approach to their beach holiday, the lodge’s spa comprises of two indoor treatment rooms, as well as a private outdoor treatment area in the forest, and offers amazing couple’s treatments.
The 12 thatched eco-sensitive rooms, with ocean or forest views, boast an earthy elegance, and are positioned to afford maximum privacy and minimal environmental impact.
