A trip to Tau Pan Camp will reveal the vast landscape and incredible wildlife of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Here you will experience the remote African wilderness in the comfort of a luxury camp setting.

Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. It offers incredible views from the elevated ridge of an ancient sand dune, and overlooks the famous Tau Pan, known for its stark beauty and remoteness. “Tau” meaning lion in Setswana, is so named for the pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lions who frequent the camp (with a particular preference for the family tent!)

With the fragile ecology in mind, Tau Pan has been constructed to utilize only solar power for electricity generation, heating water and pumping water from deep under the Kalahari sands. The camp treats wastewater in a state-of-the-art sewerage treatment plant which returns the fully treated water to the sands from where it came.

Experience & Activities

Tau Pan offers activities including game drives, day trips to the well-known Deception Valley, Sunday, Piper and Passarge Pans, star gazing, and nature walks with Bushman trackers. These exciting game drives will reveal Kalahari species including oryx, the desert-adapted springbok, jackals, the rare brown hyena, red-crested Korhaan, and herds of wildebeest.

Children of 6–12 years old are welcome, but families are required to take a private vehicle on game drives. Children younger than six are accepted only if the entire camp is reserved for exclusive use.

In an area as remote and isolated as the Kalahari Desert, the light pollution is minimal to none, and the star-gazing is simply magnificent and unrivalled by most other locations on earth. Having an unobstructed view of the night sky to fall asleep under is a truly memorable experience. The elevated sleep-out deck features a double bed, basin, and WC. This experience is available on a ‘first come first serve’ basis upon arrival in camp; however, guests staying three nights or more in Tau Pan can reserve this pre-arrival with their agent.

  • Standard Room :Set on raised decks are nine environmentally-adapted ensuite tents, affording spectacular views over the plains. Each suite has an indoor and outdoor shower, double-basin vanity, open wardrobe, King-sized double bed, living area and writing desk.
  • Family Room: The camp features one family tent on a raised deck overlooking the vast plains. The family room comprises a standard room with a King-sized double bed, an additional twin-bedded room, an indoor and outdoor shower, double-basin vanity, open wardrobe, living area and writing desk.
