Takwela Camp, the latest camp operated by Remote Africa Safaris, opened in July 2019. As experienced operators in the North Luangwa National Park they are excited to expand their offering in this remote and well-managed park which enjoys significant support from Frankfurt Zoological Society and a highly motivated complement of staff from Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

Situated on private land at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers, Takwela has stunning views across a resident hippo pod to pristine bush on all sides. The area is known as ‘Chitukuko’ which means ‘place of development’ in the local Tumbuka dialect. ‘Takwela’ is aptly named, as the direct translation is, ‘we have taken off’. Takwela offers an intimate wilderness experience and the rare opportunity to visit a beautiful and unexplored area of the North Luangwa. In true Luangwa style, expect excellent guiding, warm hospitality and fresh food as you would when visiting any Remote Africa camp.

Whilst the floodplain is not as extensive as in the mid-Luangwa, it is still prime wildlife country and will produce excellent viewing. By virtue of its remoteness, guests will virtually have exclusive access to over 50kms of Luangwa river frontage!

Takwela will accommodate a maximum of eight guests in four en-suite chalets, with two double beds in three chalets and one king chalet.

The camp is solar powered and built, primarily, from local natural materials and constructed with local skills. Activities include guided game drives and walking safaris in the mornings and afternoons, with regular stops to take in the surroundings, view wildlife and examine spoor. Enjoy a leisurely pace with a mid-morning tea and coffee break and, on the night drive, a sundowner stop for drinks and snacks.

Takwela is just a 25 minute scenic flight from our Lukuzi airstrip in South Luangwa, flying over the dramatic riverine landscape to Mwaleshi airstrip and then a 45 minute game drive and canoe crossing into camp. Transfers to / from Mwaleshi camp is part of a morning activity although direct transfers can be made with a one-hour game drive or three-and-a-half-hour walk.

Visits of three nights or more are recommended. Combine Takwela with a walking safari at Mwaleshi Camp to stay longer in the North Luangwa. Explore different areas of the park which host a highly successful black rhino sanctuary and healthy populations of lion, hyena, elephant, buffalo, leopard, wildebeest, wild dog and much more.

With so few other camps in operation in the park, guests are guaranteed the ultimate remote experience. Immerse yourself in 4636 square kilometres of unspoiled wilderness.

Why we like it

  • Set in a remote and untouched area of North Luangwa.
  • Walking safaris and game drives as activities.
  • Authentic Zambian bush camp accommodation
  • Combines perfectly with sister camps in North & South Luangwa.
