Mwagusi is owner operated by Chris Fox a member of the legendary Fox family of southern Tanzania. The camp has an enviable location on the Mwagusi Sand River in the best game viewing area of Ruaha.

Mwagusi, is a well-established camp providing comfort with a hint of understated safari elegance and was started by Chris in 1987 and has originated from a “no-frills safari experience” where the wildlife and personally guided experience is paramount. Raised locally Chris is notorious for his profound knowledge and experience with the wildlife, people and the land of Ruaha. He is best known for his deep understanding of animal behaviour especially with wild African Elephants forming astonishing relationships with these incredibly intelligent creatures.

Mwagusi Safari Camp offers its guests a unique and comfortable tented safari experience. Almost all of the camp is built from natural materials such as grass thatch, timber, driftwood, stones and reeds, allowing the camp to be in perfect balance and harmony with its surroundings.
Each of the 13 “bandas” (meaning ‘temporary shelter’) consists of a large spacious tent sheltered by a cooling thatch roof and set on a polished red floor. Each banda has en-suite facilities with flushing toilet, an unlimited supply of hot water, shower, sink, shelving, a large mirror and good night-time lighting. Built using stones, driftwood and bones the bathroom is an area of interesting, unique and original design. Thick comfortable towels and locally produced clove soap are provided.

The tented living area includes dressing table and mirror, trunk for storage, comfortable beds with high-density mattresses, safari style chairs and bedside tables for night-time reading. All the “bandas” are built into the sandy banks of the Mwagusi River providing their own private and secluded view. Each has large covered veranda, with a comfortable cushioned seating area and swinging hammock, making this the perfect place to relax and view the passing wildlife
Mwagusi Safari Camp is serious about safari and offer guests excellent game drives and walks.

There are two daily game drives, one early morning drive and one late afternoon drive taking advantage of the cooler temperatures when the animals are most active. Night drives can also be done on request, a great way to go! Flexibility is key at Mwagusi and you can choose the time and length of your game drives (from a 6-hour early morning drive, other shorter 2-3-hour drives or a full-day drive with picnic lunch). You will be accompanied by an excellent and knowledgeable guide and an experienced driver.

The guided safari walk is a 2-3 hour walk where you will be accompanied by an experienced guide as well as an armed Parks Board ranger for safety.
Mwagusi is renowned for its high calibre of local guides and their in-depth knowledge of the African bush. Local Tanzanians benefit from an in-house guide training programme aimed to provide top-class guides with excellent wildlife and bush knowledge, who have an ability to read animal behaviour – knowing when to sit patiently and watch a natural sequence of events unfold.

Food is prepared fresh every day in camp, using local produce supplied by nearby farmers and the nearest town market.

All over a very good and affordable authentic safari experience in one of the best parks in Africa!
