Kosi Forest Lodge is situated within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, giving you the opportunity to experience exclusive, close encounters with the untouched African wilderness.

A massive Zulu podberry tree is the focal point of Kosi Forest Lodge, with the lounge, dining room and bar all opening onto a large wooden deck around the tree.

The lodge is surrounded by untold biodiversity, in the wilderness of Northern KwaZulu Natal, and beauty that you simply have to see for yourself. There is limited electricity, and candlelight gives the lodge a warm, romantic ambiance reminiscent of wild African adventures of long ago. This is fitting for this ancient land with a mystical quality that you’ll never quite be able to describe. It’s a place where you can rediscover nature, and, even more importantly, rediscover yourself.

Enter a magical waterworld of lakes, Raphia forests and the home of the only fruit-eating vulture in the world. Every morning begins with the chorus of a myriad of birds. Feel the soft white sand between your toes and the shade of the peaceful forests, listen to the call of the fish eagle, embrace the warm welcome of the lodge’s staff and know that you have left the stress of your busy life behind.

Your buffet breakfast and luncheon are served in the covered dining area, where you’ll also find a 24/7 tea and coffee station with delicious homemade biscuits. You’ll enjoy most of our generous and flavourful meals on the outdoor dining deck.

Experience + Activities

Enjoy early morning or late afternoon guided walks through the magnificent Raphia palm forest. Listen out for the abundant bird calls and perhaps catch a glimpse of the rare, vegetarian palm-nut vulture.

With ever-shrinking natural spaces meaning more and more wildlife under threat, the simple act of bird-watching is a pleasure which becomes increasingly sacred. Kosi Forest Lodge is one of the best bases for bird watching in South Africa.

From 15 November to 15 January, the lodge’s guests have the privilege of tracking mother turtles as they return to the beach to lay their eggs. This is an exciting overnight expedition that involves a 4×4 drive along extremely rough roads, climbing over the sand dunes and combing the beach – all in the hopes of encountering the miraculous sight of a female turtle heaving herself out of the water, finding her ideal nesting site, digging a hole, and going into a hormone-induced trance while she lays her eggs.

During the remainder of the year enjoy full day boat trips to explore the fascinating lakes and channels surrounding the lodge. Learn about Tsonga fish traps, enjoy a picnic and walk to the pristine Bhanga Nek Beach, go fishing or canoeing, enjoy snorkeling excursions or even visit Tembe Elephant Park for a game drive experience.

Acccommodation

Kosi Forest Lodge offers a choice of six Forest rooms and two Family rooms, all tucked into a sand forest, with enough distance between each room to make you feel as if you are the only person on earth.

Each room is set on a raised wooden deck and has tented sides and a thatch roof.  There is a small private deck, where you can enjoy your morning coffee, while listening to the forest come alive. Although each room has an indoor shower, it is the outdoor bathroom that is the highlight for many. The ‘bathroom-boma’ is encircled by reed screens, affording you total privacy, while you enjoy an outdoor shower or bath whilst gazing up at the forest canopy, with the stars twinkling beyond.
